The Compliance Option Checklist and Calculation Tables are used to evaluate whether the drilling waste disposal area (DWDA) may pose a risk to the environment. Industry has accumulated years of Phase 1 and 2 data since the inception of this guideline in 2012. Mr. Purves reviewed hundreds of Phase 1 Compliance Option triggers to determine if they resulted in false positives or negatives, compared to the actual Phase 2 outcomes. The review raised questions whether relevant triggers, such as those related to unknown additives, drill-stem test (DST) assumptions, salinity and hydrocarbon thresholds, or scope of professional judgement require adjustment? A formal review of the Compliance Options could potentially provide improved confidence for the number of Phase 2’s that should be completed and enable new discussions with AER as to whether the Compliance Options should be modified based on our current understanding and relevant Phase 2 results.
